  • Yield: One 2-layer 8-inch cake 1x

Description

This Purple Velvet Cake is a stunning and delicious twist on the classic red velvet. It features a soft, moist texture with a vibrant purple hue. The combination of buttermilk, vinegar, and cocoa powder gives it a rich, slightly tangy flavor, making it perfect for special occasions or whenever you want to impress your guests!

Ingredients

Scale
  • Dry Ingredients:

    • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

  • Wet Ingredients:

    • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
    • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
    • ¾ cup vegetable oil
    • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
    • 12 teaspoons purple food coloring (adjust for desired shade)

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prepare

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients

    • In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients

    • In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, oil, vanilla extract, vinegar, and purple food coloring until well blended.
  • Prepare the Batter

    • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
    • Do not overmix, as this can make the cake dense.
  • Bake the Cakes

    • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the Cakes

    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature ingredients to ensure even mixing.
  • The vinegar and buttermilk reaction is key to achieving the light, fluffy texture.
  • For natural food coloring, use blueberry or purple sweet potato puree instead of artificial dye.

  • Pair with cream cheese frosting or buttercream for a classic finish!
